1. Limited Time and a Packed Schedule

Dylan has shared that her television job is extremely busy, often starting early in the morning and lasting until midday. After work, she returns home to fulfill her role as a mother of three young sons — Calvin, Oliver, and Rusty.

She once said:

“I wrote Misty the Cloud while sitting on the bedroom floor after putting the kids to bed. Sometimes I had to type on my phone while riding in a car.”

Juggling a full-time television job, parenting, and writing is a challenge both in terms of time and energy.

2. Pressure from the Television Industry

As a familiar face on national television, Dylan must always maintain a professional image, control her emotions, and be ready for anything live broadcasting throws her way. This often makes it difficult for her to find quiet time to be creative when writing books.

In an interview, she said:

“Television is a nonstop machine. When you walk into the studio, everything has to be perfect. But at home, I just want to be simple, be a mom, and write from the heart.”

3. Personal Emotions Affecting Creative Work

Dylan has experienced mild postpartum depression and has found it difficult at times to express emotions. These experiences helped her better understand how children feel emotionally—and she channeled that understanding into Misty the Cloud, a character that represents how kids experience and manage their feelings.

“I wanted to create something that helps kids understand their emotions—something I struggled with as a child, and honestly, even now.”

4. Fear of Public Reception

Transitioning from TV host to author made Dylan nervous about how the public would react.

“I always wondered: What will people think? Will they take me seriously? Will anyone even read my book?”

Fortunately, positive feedback from readers—especially parents and teachers—boosted her confidence and encouraged her to continue writing.

5. Balancing Career and Personal Life

Ultimately, what Dylan tries hardest to maintain is balance between her career and her family life. With three little boys at home, she works hard to make time for play, care, and meaningful connection.

That’s also one of the reasons she chose to write children’s books—to bring imaginative stories to her kids and to children all across America.
