“Yeah.”

I nodded.

Mom’s hands trembled as she reached for the papers. “This is being taken out of context.”

I leaned forward. “You told me I didn’t have a home anymore. Remember that?”

She went pale.

Alicia slid another page forward. “Text message dated 11:27 p.m. — ‘We changed the locks. You don’t live here anymore. Let’s see how brave you are now.’ That demonstrates intent to remove her from a property she contributed to significantly.”

The mediator frowned. “That language is aggressive. It could certainly suggest malice.”

Chloe flinched.

Dad said, “She’s rewriting history.”

I met his eyes. “After everything I gave you, you still think you own the narrative.”

Silence.

Alicia continued. “We’re requesting 50% ownership or equivalent compensation.”

Their lawyer whispered urgently. Whatever he said made Mom pale.

Dad’s fists clenched. “We’re not agreeing to this.”

Mom reached for him. He pulled away.

Chloe whispered, “I didn’t know.”

“Yes, you did,” I said softly. “You just didn’t want to.”

When it was over, they left in silence.

That was it. No drama. No music swelling. Just a single sentence that changed everything.

They sold the house three months later. The check I got had more zeros than anything I’d ever seen. I didn’t feel guilty. I felt balanced.

I bought a townhouse on the east side. Smaller, warmer. The kind of place that smelled like new beginnings. On move-in day, I changed the locks myself.

Ben came by with a gift — a brass keychain engraved with five words:

I cried. Quietly, but I did.
