I was in a long-distance relationship with my wife for two years before we got married. After we got married, I did everything I could to help her find a job near me so we could live together and start a family. She applied to different places. When I saw a job online that I thought suited her, I sent it to her. I also talked to my friends to see if there were any job openings where they worked.

One morning, Johnson called and said he could help, so I should have my wife send him her CV. I had met Johnson back in university, and we even tried starting a business together back then, though it didn’t succeed. After school, he became a manager at his dad’s big company.

When he offered to help, I felt like my prayers had been answered. I called my wife and asked her to send her CV, then gave her Johnson’s number so she could follow up with him directly. After she sent it, she told me, and I called Johnson to confirm he got it.

About a week later, he called my wife for an interview. She went, and she told me Johnson was one of the people on the interview panel. I told her right away that she probably got the job already.

After that, my wife didn’t talk much about the job. When I asked Johnson about it, he told me not to worry and that he was handling things. I also asked my wife if she had heard anything, and she said she was in touch with Johnson. It took about two months, but eventually, she got the job. I was so happy that I bought gift baskets and other things, went to Johnson’s house, and gave them to him to say thank you.

My wife finally quit her old job and moved in with me. My dream came true—I could now sleep and wake up next to her every day. We could build a life together, go out, and spend evenings talking like most married couples do.

One day, my wife asked me, “What are you and Johnson really up to?” I was confused and asked her what she meant. She looked at me strangely, then said, “Never mind.” But I wasn’t satisfied with that answer, so I kept asking. Eventually, she said Johnson had been giving her tasks that felt suspicious—like they weren’t normal—and she thought maybe I was involved, like the two of us were testing her.

She started coming home very late and said it was because of work. She even had to work on Saturdays, even though it..It wasn’t part of her contract, but she still had to work on weekends and sometimes even brought work home. I was concerned, but I didn’t want to seem like the type of husband who meddles in his wife’s job, so I didn’t bring it up with Johnson.

This went on for over a year until my wife told me she wanted to quit because the job was too much. She was always exhausted and had become easily irritated. That wasn’t like her—she used to talk about what was bothering her, not just get angry. I told her not to resign just yet but to find another job first. Her salary was even higher than mine, so the thought of her quitting and staying home without another job worried me.

She went on leave, but a week later, she was called back to work. When she told me, something felt off. I started thinking she might be making excuses or using work as a cover for something else. I called Johnson to ask about it, and he said it was true, but he wasn’t the one who made that decision. I said, “Your company seems to be really demanding, based on how late she gets home.” We didn’t go deep into it—we just laughed it off.

A month later, my wife came home and said she had quit her job. I was shocked and said, “What? That’s not what we agreed on. Why didn’t you tell me?” She just replied, “You wouldn’t understand.”

Honestly, I was really upset with my wife, so I started ignoring her. Every time I came home from work and saw her there, I’d get angry right away. I think that’s what finally made her tell me the truth. She said, “Johnson wanted to sleep with me.”

I froze. I asked, “Are you just making excuses for quitting your job?” She replied, “This is exactly why I didn’t tell you earlier. I knew you wouldn’t believe me. It’s okay.”

She explained that Johnson started hitting on her right after the interview. He invited her to his office and began flirting, acting like he didn’t even know she was my wife. When she asked him if he knew we were married, he said he didn’t—but that it didn’t change the fact she was attractive.

She told me that Johnson asked her what she was willing to give in order to get the job. She said she offered to give up two months of her salary. Johnson laughed and said, “Do I look like I need your money?” That was the same day she had asked me, “What’s going on between you and Johnson?”

I was furious. I shouted, “Did he touch you?” She shook her head and said, “That doesn’t matter. I’m not working there anymore.” I said, “It does matter. Tell me—did he do anything you can prove?” She said, “He tried, but I didn’t let him. That’s why he started overloading me with work and eventually began treating me badly when he realized I wasn’t going to sleep with him.”

She begged me not to take any action. But you can’t hurt a man this way and then expect him to stay quiet—so I called Johnson right away.

I called Johnson right away and asked him what really happened. He said, “So you actually believe her lies? Tell her to show you proof. She was just being lazy and didn’t like being corrected. She quit because she thought I was after her, but I just needed her to get the work done.”
