A shooting incident at a high-rise building with multiple offices in downtown Manhattan has resulted in at least five fatalities, including the gunman.

The gunfire erupted around 6:00 PM on July 28 (5:00 AM today Hanoi time) after a man armed with a rifle stormed into the high-rise building on Park Avenue, which houses many offices and attracts a lot of tourists. Hundreds of police officers, along with helicopters and a drone, were deployed to the scene shortly after the incident.

“Four people, including one off-duty police officer, were killed. The suspect also died after shooting himself,” a law enforcement source said.

Police were dispatched to the shooting scene in downtown Manhattan.

Images released by U.S. media show a man wearing sunglasses, a dark jacket, and carrying a rifle as he entered the building.

According to New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch, surveillance footage shows the man entering the building lobby and immediately opening fire at a police officer and others. The suspect then moved to the elevator area, shooting a security guard, before proceeding to the 33rd floor, where he shot another person before fatally shooting himself.

“A woman exited the elevator, and the suspect allowed her to pass by,” Tisch said.

The weapon used in the attack was an M4 rifle. Police searched the suspect’s vehicle and found a loaded handgun, a rifle magazine, ammunition, prescription drugs, and other items.

Sources said the suspect was Shane Tamura, 27, from Las Vegas, Nevada. Police found identification documents on Tamura’s body, including a firearm permit. Authorities confirmed that Tamura acted alone.

The New York Police Department, with the support of the FBI, is investigating the motive behind the shooting. The suspect had a history of mental illness.

A witness said the suspect moved from floor to floor in the building as office workers were preparing to leave for the day.

Jessica Chen said she was attending a presentation with dozens of people on the second floor when she “heard multiple gunshots in rapid succession from the first floor.” They ran into a meeting room and used a table to block the door. “We were very scared,” Chen said, adding that at that moment, she texted her parents to tell them she loved them.

This marks the 254th shooting incident in the U.S. this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive, a nonprofit organization that tracks gun violence. According to the organization’s definition, a shooting is classified as a mass shooting when at least four people are injured or killed, excluding the attacker.
