The reality competition series premiered tonight with returning judges, creator Simon Cowell, Sofia Vergara, and Howie Mandel. Spice Girls’ Mel B is taking over for supermodel Heidi Klum, who left the panel last season. Mel B was on the judging panel from Season 8 to Season 13. Terry Crews is also back as the show’s host.

The premiere episode featured two coveted Golden Buzzers, one of which left fans in tears. Singer Jourdan Blue performed a soulful rendition of “Breakeven” by The Script that moved Howie to slam the Golden Buzzer for the 23-year-old.

Simon hit the Golden Buzzer early in the night for Brazilian light show dance act Light Wire, but it was Jourdan who left viewers stunned by his talent and moved by his story.

When pressed, the gilded button immediately sends the act to the live shows. In the past, each judge could only use the Golden Buzzer once per season, but this season, each judge gets two Golden Buzzers.

Jourdan is a street performer from New Orleans who started out his act with an emotional introduction.

“At the beginning of the year, there was an attack on New Orleans right on the exact block where I perform…” he said, overcome with emotion as tears welled up in his eyes. “It made me realize that there’s so much more to live for. That’s what made me choose AGT. I feel like this is the best way to level up.”

The aspiring singer got off to a rocky start before busking on Bourbon Street.

“In my teenage years, I got down the wrong path, and I got kicked out of school. I got myself into some trouble and ended up on my own at 16,” he said before his audition. “There was definitely a while there where I was homeless, and I would bounce around from friend’s house to friend’s house or sleep in bathrooms where I worked at.”

His grandfather took him in, which gave him the opportunity to focus on his future as a singer.

The performance received a standing ovation from the audience and the judges as Jourdan’s girlfriend and newborn son watched from the audience, and his grandfather watched via FaceTime.

“I think you’re a star,” Howie told him. “I think your name is gonna be on the lips of everybody watching this.”

Fans flooded social media to praise the young busker’s talent, with one X, formerly Twitter, user writing, “ok crying big tears over Jordan I KNEW he was getting that buzzer #AGT.”

Another said, “Wow Jordan Blue can sing hearing his story of being a street performer was amazing #AGT.”

Viewers also praised the judge for his decision to use the buzzer. “This was the best singer act of all time that I’ve seen on AGT and am so glad you gave him the Golden Buzzer Howie,” one fan wrote.

With his distinctive style and incredible range, it didn’t take long for Blue’s voice to win over the audience, many of whom watched him with their mouths agape. When Blue finished, all four Judges immediately stood up to applaud.

“I’m in love with you. Your hair, your voice, your energy. You’re a rockstar,” said Sofía Vergara. Simon Cowell praised his ability to “feed off the audience” and called his talent “amazing.”

Howie Mandel was eager to change Blue’s life, explaining that after 20 seasons, he knows a “dream come true” moment when he sees one, and as he stood up, the whole auditorium roared because they knew what was coming. Blue immediately burst into tears and was joined on stage by his girlfriend and baby Jax.

“I think you’re a star,” Mandel told him. “I think your name is gonna be on the lips of everybody watching this.”

The winner of America’s Got Talent receives a large cash prize and a chance to headline a show on the Las Vegas Strip. Episodes air every week on Tuesdays at 8 PM EST on NBC and Peacock.
