Carrie Underwood is facing major backlash following her comments to American Idol frontrunner Jamal Roberts during Monday night’s Disney-themed episode, with fans accusing her of showing bias — and even sabotaging — the show’s last remaining Black contestant.
After Roberts delivered an electrifying version of “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” — earning standing ovations from judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie — Carrie offered an unexpected critique:
“I feel like you missed such an opportunity to move around and entertain… We are getting close to the end here, it is time to pull out all the stops.”
The crowd and fellow judges had been emphatically supportive, praising Roberts for transforming the iconic anthem from Remember the Titans into a heartfelt, soul-stirring performance. Richie called the moment “amazing” and praised Roberts’ ability to “Jamalerize” a song. But Carrie’s comment stood in stark contrast, especially when she remained seated during the standing ovation.

The response from fans on social media was swift and intense:
Double Standards? Many pointed out that other contestants had performed standing still throughout the season without criticism. “What kills me is Carrie telling Jamal he needs to move around, but these others are staying in the same spot and not moving,” tweeted @lakenbriannaxo.
Bias Accusations: Some accused Carrie of being dismissive toward soulful singers or Black artists. “Carrie DEFINITELY DOES NOT LIKE JAMAL,” tweeted @LadyKaija.
“She thinks country is the only genre out there,” added @topfloordes.
Support for Roberts: Others highlighted Roberts’ talent and consistency, calling Carrie’s comments unfair and unnecessary. “Dear Carrie, this is flat foot singing! He don’t have to do flips,” wrote @ButtaKupJ.
“This man is sanging!”
Later in the episode, Roberts gave a stunning, emotional performance of “Beauty and the Beast”, earning widespread praise again. This time, Carrie was notably quiet, saying little as the other judges applauded him and urged America to vote.
Luke Bryan summed up what many were thinking:
“Let’s win this thing, baby! Let’s win this thing!”
Despite the controversy, Jamal Roberts advanced to the Top 3 and is now headed into Sunday’s Season 23 finale with a real shot at winning the title. But Carrie’s comments left a sour note for many fans — some even calling for her removal from the panel next season.
