Whoopi Goldberg — frequent vacationer to Italian locales who also previously visited her late bestie, Pope Francis, several times at the Vatican — has officially booked a professional gig set to hit TV screens all across Italy.
The Oscar-winning actress (currently in Italy amid a temporary hiatus from her post on The View) shared an Instagram video Friday, revealing as she stood on a sunny coastline that she’s joined the cast of the 29-year-old Italian soap opera Un Posto Al Sole in a special role.
“I just wanted to stop in and say how happy I am to be joining the cast of Un Posto Al Sole,” Goldberg said of the regional production, which first debuted in 1996 and is broadcast in Italian on the country’s Rai 3 network.

While she’s excited, Goldberg admitted, “They know it’s a crazy idea. I know it’s a crazy idea. But, what a wonderful thing to do. I’m looking forward to it. I’m excited.”
She added, “No, my Italian is not perfect, but we’ve worked it out” in order for her to appear on the program.
“Ciao! See you on TV!” Goldberg said at the end of the video, which was posted in collaboration with the official account for TV production company Fremantle.
In the post’s caption, the network wrote, “A surprise is coming to #UnPostoAlSole: @whoopigoldberg joins the cast!”
The statement additionally confirmed that “her character will be part of a special storyline and will appear in multiple episodes in 2026 on @instarai3 and @raiplay_official.”
Entertainment Weekly has reached out to a representative for Goldberg for additional information about her role on the Italian soap opera.
While in Italy, the Ghost star and EGOT-winning entertainer recently received an award from the Taobuk Taormina International Book Festival in recognition of her book Bits and Pieces.
Goldberg has long expressed adoration for Italy and its people, as she frequently travels there (and posts videos and images to social media) while on vacation from moderating The View.

The star’s View cohost Joy Behar, however, has a more comical relationship to the region, as she famously revealed in 2023 that she once called an Italian woman a “bitch” while aboard a passenger train in the country, after the employee wouldn’t let her use an on-board premium-level bathroom.
