This friend seemed to possess an intuitive understanding of romance, as the two quickly formed a strong connection. At the time they began their relationship, Bret was frequently traveling for work assignments in Washington D.C. and internationally, while Amy resided in Chicago. Despite the distance, he made the effort to visit her regularly.

“Then Dr. Martin delivered the words that have echoed in my mind every day since: ‘if your son doesn’t have surgery within the next two weeks, he’s not going to make it.’ My mouth went dry instantly, and I felt as though I couldn’t breathe. Time seemed to freeze.” As Paul was taken for surgery as a fragile infant, Bret remembers, “I noticed Amy tensing up, and I turned to her, saying, ‘it’s time to entrust him to the doctors and the higher power.’”

On July 10, 2010, Paul was joined by his younger brother, Daniel Bret Baier, as Amy and Bret continued to grow their family.
