Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE) fought back against a Fox News host on Wednesday when debating the cuts to government funding and staff.

Martha MacCallum parroted accusations from tech billionaire Elon Musk that Social Security was riddled with “waste, fraud and abuse,” even though the claim that millions of dead people have gotten checks has been debunked by The Washington Post.

Coons said that if President Donald Trump’s administration was so concerned about stopping “waste, fraud and abuse,” they wouldn’t have fired the inspector general at the United States Agency for International Development, who filed complaints about waste after the administration shut the doors on the organization without warning.

MacCallum tried to speak over him, but Coons refused to stop talking about waste from Trump’s government.

“I’m amazed. So, so, you’re saying that I’m assuming there’s waste, fraud and abuse?” she asked.

“In Social Security,” replied Coons.

“And I think it’s equally surprising that you’re assuming that the government is functioning in an efficient way,” McCallum said. “When we all know—”

“That’s not what I said,” Coons interrupted, talking over her. “There are, Martha, Martha. There are inspector generals in every single agency that are there to find —”

McCallum shook her head and rolled her eyes.

“Oh, I know,” she said with sarcasm. “They’ve done a fantastic, bang-up job.”

“To start the administration by firing all of them does not suggest a deep interest to these career non-partisan inspectors general about waste,” Coons said.

McCallum accused him of putting his fingers in his ears and singing “blah, blah, blah. It’s not happening.”

Coons tried to correct her again that it wasn’t what he said.

“Let me repeat the point,” Coons said over her. “That if Elon Musk says that Social Security is a Ponzi scheme and this president has fired the relevant inspectors general, who are the people most capable — not a bunch of 20-year-old software engineers with no previous government experience.”

McCallum shouted over him, growing increasingly frustrated.

“Why are they the most capable? Did you watch this interview, Senator? Did you watch the interview? Did you watch the interview?” she repeated.

He wasn’t certain which interview she was talking about.

“You’re yelling so much,” he said with a smile.

“No, because I can’t get a word in edgewise,” she complained. She began asking about a panel discussion of Trump-supporting business leaders, she said, “who have made a lot of money and run good businesses efficiently.”

Coons disputed that Musk has run at least one of his businesses efficiently, saying that Twitter was “run into the ground.”

McCallum again mischaracterized Coons, saying he didn’t think the government was run efficiently. He corrected her a third time
