One member of the Good Morning America team, Whit Johnson, revealed that his family’s world was shifted after they made a huge discovery thanks to 23andMe. The 42-year-old opened up about the life-changing news during a recent episode of the morning show as 23andMe filed for bankruptcy.
GMA and Johnson shared the meaningful story on the show and social media, with the journalist writing, “I was VERY nervous to tell this story! My DNA test on 23andMe unlocked a family mystery.”
Johnson noted that his family was previously aware that his father, Steve, was adopted, but after putting their DNA into 23andMe, they discovered a slew of family members that they didn’t know about, including Steve’s brother.
“Completely by accident, I found my dad’s long lost brother. That was just the beginning. Over the years, we’ve learned about his mother and father… and connected with a total 4 brothers and one possible sister,” wrote Johnson on Instagram. He referenced the recent bankruptcy as he went on, writing, “But now as 23andMe files for bankruptcy, many families like mine are grappling with the difficult decision to delete their genetic data.”
In the video, Johnson shared the moment that Steve and his brother Bear met for the first time in an emotional scene. Fans were in awe of the sweet story, with people calling it “beautiful” and “amazing,” while another said of the bankruptcy situation, “This must be a tough decision.”
23andMe officially filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last week, leaving users scrambling to decide whether or not to delete their data before it changes hands if the company is sold.
