Todd and Julie Chrisley, the reality TV couple convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud, have just been granted a stunning pardon that erased their legal troubles. But what really sparked this dramatic turnaround? Rumors swirl that their daughter’s unexpected appearance at a high-profile political event played a key role. Now fans are left questioning: Was this pardon purely legal mercy, or part of a bigger, more tangled family and political drama? What does this mean for the Chrisley family’s future in reality TV?
Dive into the full story behind the pardon and the surprising family dynamics shaking the spotlight.
Donald Trump has pardoned the convicted reality TV couple Todd and Julie Chrisley.
Having already granted a number of high-profile pardons since resuming his post as the president of the United States, Donald Trump has added reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley to the list. On Tuesday, the Republican leader said that he will pardon the couple, who have been in prison since being convicted of tax evasion and bank fraud.
The Chrisley couple was sentenced in 2022, with Todd receiving 12 years and Julie 7 years. They eventually reported to prison in January 2023. Although Trump hasn’t actually met them, he knows their daughter, Savannah Chrisley, as per a White House official. In addition to speaking at the Republican National Convention last year, she even sat down for an interview with Trump’s daughter-in-law, Lara Trump, on Fox News earlier this month.
Todd and Julie Chrisley pardon: Trump broke the news to their daughter
Their 27-year-old daughter has been seeking a pardon for her parents ever since. Having already met Trump before, she revealed this week that the president called her just as she was walking into Sam’s Club. As per her Instagram video dated Tuesday, May 27 (US time), the POTUS told her that he had pardoned the Chrisleys.
“I have shed so many tears,” she said on IG. “The President called me personally as I was walking into Sam’s Club and notified me that he was signing pardon paperwork for both of my parents. So, both my parents are coming home tonight or tomorrow. I still don’t believe it’s real. I’m freaking out.”
Exclaiming that it was “time to go get mom and dad,” Savannah, overcome by emotions, added, “I just can’t thank you guys enough for sticking with my family and loving us and supporting us… It still doesn’t feel real. It doesn’t. I’m freaking out, so I’m going to go and prepare to pick up my parents. My parents get to start their lives over!”
According to details revealed by a White House official to E! News, the pardon papers for the reality TV couple will be readied before the end of the day on May 28 in the United States.
Who are Todd and Julie Chrisley: Reality show ties, family
The couple – married since 1996 – is best known for starring on the show Chrisley Knows Best, which aired for 10 seasons from 2014 through 2023. The USA Network reality show explored their opulent ways of life, while also documenting their family business in Atlanta and Nashville. Furthermore, it chronicled their convoluted family dynamics, including their estrangement with their eldest kids, Kyle and Lindsie Chrisley, whom Todd welcomed with his first wife, Teresa Terry.
A spin-off reality series finds their adult children, Chase and Savannah Chrisley, at its centre. Premiering in 2019, it went on for four seasons. Todd Chrisley shares these two (and his 19-year-old son Grayson) with his current wife, Julie Chrisley.
A then-25-year-old Savannah stepped up to take on the role as the sole caretaker of their youngest kids, Grayson and Chloe. As complicated as their family tree is, the latter 12-year-old is actually the daughter of Todd’s son Kyle. She had originally been under the care of the reality couple until Savannah took over.
About the Todd-Julie Chrisley case
According to the Justice Department, the reality TV stars submitted false financial statements to obtain over $30 million in personal loans, which they intended to use for fulfilling payments for their luxury cars, designer clothes, travel and real estate.
CBC News further reported that these fraudulently acquired loans were also used to pay old ones. However, Todd Chrisley eventually filed for bankruptcy, which prosecutors described as a ploy to walk away from completing their repayment.
Despite them earning millions of dollars through their reality show, the Chrisleys concealed their true income from the IRS in an attempt to avoid paying nearly $500,000 in delinquent taxes. Additionally, they even failed to file tax returns and pay taxes during the period 2013-2016.
At the time of their prison sentence announcement, a Justice Dept attorney said, “their lengthy sentences reflect the magnitude of their criminal scheme and should serve as a warning to others tempted to exploit our nation’s community banking system for unlawful personal gain.”
Todd Chrisley – Julie Chrisley charges, prison
Beyond the couple’s aforementioned charges, 52-year-old Julie Chrisley was also convicted of obstruction justice and wire fraud. The reality TV couple was even ordered to pay $17.8 million in restitution.
Todd’s original date of release was set for June 2023, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons. He has been serving his sentence at a minimum security federal prison camp. Meanwhile, his wife, Julie has been at a facility in Lexington, Kentucky. She was initially set to get out in April 2028.
Back in October 2024, Chrisley’s lawyer Jay Surgent told The Independent that Todd was fired from job in prison. Without revealing much details, he said that Chrisley had an administrative role as an assistant to the Chaplain. He would help with “the set-up for religious procedures for various religious affiliations that are Christian, Jewish, and Muslim.” He is believed to have lost the job after two years due to his interactions with various inmates who were a part of the prison’s Residental Drug Abuse Program (RDAP).
Attorney confirms status as Trump supporters, why they were targeted
Both Todd and Julie are also known to be longtime Trump supporters. A proof for the same was discovered in the form of a MAGA sticker from the former’s cell, which the guards at FPC Pensacola got rid of, as per his lawyer.
In a statement to USA Today, Alex Little, another one of the couple’s attorneys said, “President Trump recognized what we’ve argued from the beginning: Todd and Julie were targeted because of their conservative values and high profile.” He even went as far as claiming that the couple’s “prosecution was tainted by multiple constitutional violations and political bias.”
A press release by his law firm further alleged, “The Chrisleys’ pardon petition detailed serious misconduct by the government, including an illegal raid, reliance on tainted evidence, and a trial that featured false testimony from a key government witness.”
