ABC News staff are said to be “wiping everything” from their computers after host Terry Moran was axed over a social media post that criticized Donald Trump and Stephen Miller.

In a now-deleted post on X, the TV host referred to the President and the White House Deputy Chief of Staff as “world-class haters.” Terry, who was a reporter and anchor for ABC News for almost 28 years, was suspended on Sunday – with the TV channel releasing a statement saying they would not be renewing his contract following the publication of his post.

“We are at the end of our agreement with Terry Moran, and based on his recent post, which was a clear violation of ABC News policies, we have made the decision not to renew,” said ABC News. “At ABC News, we hold all of our reporters to the highest standards of objectivity, fairness, and professionalism, and we remain committed to delivering straightforward, trusted journalism.”

After his axe, Terry took to X to say he will now keep sharing updates on Substack as he vowed to continue reporting and interviewing – but just on a different platform. His abrupt firing, though, is said to have sent the entire network into crisis mode, with staffers feeling anxious that their personal posts could be used against them and potentially lead to their termination as well.

A senior member of staff told Rob Shuter’s Substack, “This isn’t just a firing. It’s a purge. People are wiping everything – social media, emails, old files. Even personal text threads are vanishing. If Trump could see it and spin it as anti-him, it’s being erased.”

According to the publication, a producer said the newsroom has entered a “full-blown survival mode” which has seen employees scrubbing their digital footprints in anticipation of further crackdowns. One source revealed, “I deleted 10 years of tweets overnight. Even stuff that seemed harmless – quotes from journalists, links to op-eds – it’s all gone. We’re terrified.”

Rob wrote that one junior correspondent told him that staffers have also been “screenshotting and deleting Slack messages” as “there’s a fear that if the wrong thing leaks, someone else could be next.” Describing the mood as “chilling,” an insider said they feel “like Trump is running the place now,” while a long-time producer said the President appears to be “dictating what we can say now.”

After being fired, Terry shared a video in which he said, “For almost 28 years, I was a reporter and anchor for ABC News, and as you may have heard, I’m not there anymore. I’m here, with you, on Substack, this amazing space. And I can’t wait to get at it, to get at the important work that we all have to do in this time of such trouble for our country. I’m gonna be reporting and interviewing and just sharing from you, and hoping to hear from you as well.”

Terry noted that he will need to get the newsletter up and running “a few days, maybe a little bit longer.” Almost two months before Terry was fired, he interviewed the billionaire President, earning kudos from his peers for gently pressing Trump over false claims he made about a man deported to El Salvador under his administration.

An annoyed Trump snapped at Terry midway through their discussion, claiming that he “never heard” of the ousted ABC host. “You’re not being very nice,” Trump added, hinting that Terry shouldn’t be so oppositional, given the “big break” he received in getting Trump to sit down with him.

Under his post on X, Terry’s fans offered their support amid his career shakeup, with one sharing on the platform, “You’re a martyr for truth. Stay strong and I’m sure the best for you is ahead!” Additionally, one penned, “Well — this makes me so f–king happy. Welcome to Substack, Terry!!! See you there!!” A third shared, “Good to hear from you and excited for the path ahead.”
