Savannah Guthrie Broke Up with Her Husband the Day He Proposed

How to Watch

Watch TODAY weekdays at 7AM ET on NBC.

During an appearance on the February 26 episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Guthrie told the story of how her husband, Michael Feldman, popped the question to her. As it turns out, the TODAY star actually broke up with him a few hours earlier, the same day he had gone down on one knee! Strap yourselves in, everybody — you’ve never heard a proposal story quite like this one.

Guthrie wasted no time jumping into the incredible story from 2013.

“We had at that point been dating for five-and-a-half years,” Guthrie explained. “Again, we weren’t 20 when we got married. So it was like…”

“Jump in the deep end any moment, sir!” Clarkson interjected.

Even Guthrie’s family was growing impatient at Feldman’s lack of urgency.

“My mother was like, ‘You two, you need to either do it or don’t. Just do something,’” Guthrie recalled.

“So we had this trip planned,” Guthrie continued. “I certainly did not think we were getting engaged because when you’ve been dating for five-and-a-half years, you no longer think a trip to the beach is the day. Like, you’re not getting your nails done.”

Upon arrival at their beach resort, Guthrie realized she had already come to a decision — and she broke the news to her unsuspecting boyfriend as soon as she could.

“Well honey, you know, we love each other, but this has been going on too long, so I think, let’s just say goodbye, let’s let each other go,” she remembered telling Feldman.

Little did Guthrie know that Feldman literally had an engagement ring in his pocket and was planning to propose to her that day!

So for the rest of the day, Guthrie was “weepy” and mourning her lost relationship, but when Feldman asked her to have some champagne with her out on their balcony, everything changed. Guthrie didn’t know what was happening at first, and it took Feldman getting down on one knee and revealing the ring for her to realize that the moment she’d been waiting for had arrived!

Of course, the star said yes — and the couple have been happily married ever since.

“It was so shocking to me, and I was so happy,” she told Clarkson.

Guthrie wrapped up her book tour for Mostly What God Does is Love You in February and couldn’t think of a better way to commemorate her literary success than by getting one of the sweetest tattoos ever: Two small hearts on the inside of her forearm.

But that’s not the best part about Guthrie’s fresh ink. The design itself was a creation by two very talented young artists. The two small hearts were actually designed by her two kids, Vale and Charley. That’s right; the tattoo artist used the kids’ hand-drawn masterpieces to create a permanent work of art, making it extra special for Guthrie.
