As American Idol Season 23 came to a close on May 18, 2025, fans were moved not only by the crowning of winner Jamal Roberts, but by the deeply personal tribute delivered by runner-up John Foster. During his Top 3 hometown visit, Foster brought the spotlight to Addis, Louisiana, where he returned to celebrate with his community—and honor the memory of a beloved friend.
An Unforgettable Homecoming in Addis
John Foster’s journey home was packed with powerful moments. He began his day visiting his sister Presley’s elementary school, then made a stop at his alma mater, Brusly High School, where he was once co-valedictorian. At a school pep rally, he offered life advice to students: “If you wish to leave a greater legacy, listen to your teachers.”
From there, Foster traveled to Baton Rouge, where the Louisiana House of Representatives honored him with an official resolution. The singer performed a soulful rendition of “Amazing Grace”—including a verse in Cajun French—bringing lawmakers to their feet. Governor Jeff Landry issued an executive proclamation declaring May 14 as John Foster Benoit Appreciation Day.
The celebration continued with a parade through downtown, where Foster rode a massive crawfish-themed float, tossing beads to cheering crowds. That evening, thousands gathered at Bayou Plaquemine Waterfront Park for a celebratory concert. After arriving by boat, Foster performed six fan-favorite songs, including Garth Brooks’ “Callin’ Baton Rouge”, Elvis Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock”, and his original single, “Tell That Angel I Love Her.”
A Heartfelt Tribute on the Idol Stage
Foster’s Idol single, “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” was written in memory of his late friend Maggie Dunn, who tragically died in a car accident. During his hometown concert, Foster broke down in tears while performing the song. He carried that emotional weight into the Idol finale, where he delivered a moving rendition of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” as a tribute to home and healing.
In a post-finale interview with TV Insider, Foster reflected: “My hometown visit was proof that even if I were to be eliminated at number 3, I would forever have a place in the industry. Addis, Brusly, Plaquemine, Port Allen, Baton Rouge—you’ve been supporting me from day one.”
What’s Next for John Foster?
Finishing as the runner-up out of more than 120,000 contestants, Foster is using the momentum to build his career. He’s currently promoting “Tell That Angel I Love Her,” which he wrote solo, and plans to begin work on his debut studio album soon.
“It gives people a good glimpse of who I am as an artist and a writer,” he told TV Insider.
When asked about potentially joining Dancing With the Stars, Foster didn’t rule it out. “It’s certainly not a no,” he said with a laugh.
But for now, the young artist is focused on the next steps, eager to return home, reunite with his dog, and continue sharing his voice with the world.
“To think that I’m No. 2 out of the Top 24? The Top 24 were the most incredible I’ve ever seen in my life,” Foster said. “I’m beyond thankful. And I can’t wait to keep making music for y’all as long as the good Lord lets me.”
