WASHINGTON, DC - MARCH 04: Political commentator and host at Fox News Jesse Watters appears on air during the Fox News Special prior to President Trump's Joint Address to Congress at the FOX News D.C. Bureau on March 04, 2025 in Washington, DC.

Fox News host Jesse Watters will defend President Donald Trump even at the cost of a self-own. He made that clear last Monday at The Five.

President Trump’s golfing expedition during the weekend was highly criticized by social media users and news outlets alike. As the stock market plummeted, Trump putted hole-in-ones in Florida. To make matters worse, Trump sent Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to a dignified transfer ceremony in his place to greet four fallen United States soldiers. Needless to say, golfing and bragging about having a low handicap have never been more inappropriate.

But Fox News hosts generally disagreed with the criticism directed against Trump. Fox co-host Dana Perino expressed, “Jesse, one of the things I cannot stand is complaints about golf.”

Watters agreed with Perino. “And that’s not a middle finger to middle America. That’s a middle finger to all these foreign countries who are trying to get on the phone and negotiate these tariffs down.” Oddly enough, Watters sarcastically conceded that he would’ve been far more critical if former President Biden went golfing as the economy went into freefall. “But if Biden was golfing during a stock market like this, I’m sure I wouldn’t say a word.”

Despite his praise for Trump, Watters did own up to feeling nervous about the falling state of the economy. “I know I’m not panicking, Dana, because I’m not looking. I haven’t looked at my bank account. I’m afraid,” Watters confessed. It looks like one of the president’s staunchest defenders couldn’t ignore the economic impact of Trump’s tariffs. Prior to the excessive “retaliatory” tariffs, the stock market had already been plunging. Nevertheless, most of them justify Trump’s decision by ramping up the anti-globalist and free trade rhetoric that the president and his administration have been pushing.

Personality politics over policy

Regardless of Watters’s self-roast at The Five, he just admitted that he most likely would’ve been critical of Biden if he had been golfing while the rest of Americans were in dire straits. This isn’t a surprising statement, given that former President Barack Obama has also been highly condemned by Fox News about his golfing hobby during his presidency.

All this just proves that some political decisions matter little. So long as they’re in agreement with the personality of the leader in power, then there’s nothing to be said against him. Those who have the due diligence to criticize the president are merely “panicans” or afflicted with “Trump Derangement Syndrome.”
