The hosts of Fox & Friends have criticized Zohran Mamdani after reports surfaced that he identified as “Black or African American” on a college application over a decade ago.

According to a New York Times article, Mamdani selected both “Asian” and “Black or African American” when applying to Columbia University in 2009 as a high school student, though he has since revealed the reason behind his action.

Despite this, Fox and Friends co-host Charlie Hurt ripped into the New York City mayoral frontrunner, labeling him a “racist” and accusing him of being against American values. “Democrats’ new nominee to be the mayor of New York City clearly despises America and everything we stand for. Fully blown communist and also a racist, by the way,” Hurt said.

However, the 33-year-old politician has since addressed the issue. In his comments to The Times, he explained that he does not identify as Black or African American. Instead, he said he checked both boxes on the application to “capture the fullness” of his heritage.

“Most college applications don’t have a box for Indian-Ugandans, so I checked multiple boxes trying to capture the fullness of my background,” the lawmaker said as he defended the move.

He noted that he specified “Ugandan” in a section of the application that allowed for more detailed personal information. “Even though these boxes are constraining, I wanted my college application to reflect who I was,” he added.

Mamdani, who recently secured the Democratic nomination for New York City mayor, was born in Uganda to an Indian Ugandan father and an Indian American mother.

He spent part of his childhood in South Africa before relocating to New York City at the age of 7. His campaign has focused heavily on housing reform, immigrant rights, and sharing his background as a Muslim and South Asian immigrant.

Previously, he revealed that identifying himself as African American would be “misleading.”

“I’m an Indian, Ugandan, New Yorker,” Mamdani said during a campaign event in April when discussing his identity. When asked directly if he would identify as African American, he responded, “No I would not.”

“I’m proud to be Ugandan but I think that is misleading,” he added.
