Greg Gutfeld Sparks Outrage After Crude On-Air “Joke” About Katy Perry—Pop Star Fires Back With Legal Threats, Fox News Scrambles to Contain Backlash as Viewers and Celebs Join the Firestorm!
What started as a typical late-night segment quickly spiraled into full-blown controversy when Fox News host Greg Gutfeld cracked a shockingly crude “joke” about pop icon Katy Perry. The comment, aired live and dripping with inappropriate innuendo, instantly ignited backlash across social media. But Perry didn’t let it slide—she hit back hard, with sources close to the singer suggesting legal action may be on the table. As the scandal snowballs, Fox News is feeling the heat and fans are choosing sides fast.
You won’t believe what Gutfeld said—or how Katy responded. Dive into the full story before it takes another wild turn.
Fox News host Greg Gutfeld went beyond the pale late Friday night with a crude joke about Katy Perry following her flight into space.
“To prepare for her trip on the Blue Origin rocket, Katy Perry said, quote, she read a book on string theory–we’re told she thought it was about the effects of zero gravity on tampons,” Gutfeld said on Gutfeld!
On Monday, the singer-songwriter was among a crew of six women—including Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez, TV personality Gayle King, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, and film producer Kerianne Flynn—to embark on a space flight launched by Bezos’ Blue Origin space exploration group.
Returning to Earth after approximately 11 minutes at the edge of outer space, Perry said the experience had left her feeling “super connected to life” and “so connected to love” in comments that have since been rigorously memed online and derided by the likes of Wendy’s and far-right political commentator Ben Shapiro.
Gutfeld’s Friday-night gag about Perry wasn’t a one-off either, with the host also cracking genitalia-based jokes at the expense of Sanchez and Gayle, amid peals of laughter from his audience.
“There’s a new conspiracy that the Blue Origin crew faked their flight to space,” he said while the screen displayed a photo of Sanchez, quickly adding: “Come on, what’s fake about this astronaut?”
Noting that the Kardashian family had gifted Sanchez a $3,000 purse on her return from space, Gutfeld further joked that “not to be outdone,” Oprah had in turn gifted King a replica of the rocket they had traveled in, promptly followed by an image of a vibrator on the screen beside him.
“Yeah, don’t fall on one of those,” Gutfeld said. “That was a night I won’t forget.”
It hasn’t even been a week since the New Shepard flight took off from the launch site near Van Horn, Texas, but the criticism might have a few of the passengers on the space ride filled with a little bit of regret.
Katy Perry was one of the high-profile celebrities who took part in the Blue Origin adventure, along with Gayle King and Lauren Sánchez, but she is reportedly having some second thoughts in the aftermath. “Katy doesn’t regret going to space. It was life-changing,” an insider told the Daily Mail. “What she does regret is making a public spectacle out of it.”
Perry caught a lot of heat for sharing her set list for her upcoming The Lifetimes Tour on a butterfly, honoring her four-year-old daughter Daisy with a flower while she floated in space, and kissing the ground 11 minutes after she took off.
She talked about feeling “‘super connected to love” and relished in her new “astronaut” title. ‘It’s not about singing my songs. It’s about a collective energy in there. It’s about us. It’s about making space for future women and taking up space and belonging,” Perry explained in an interview after she landed. “And it’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”
The Daily Mail source claimed that the “Firework” singer wishes she could take back some of the “close-up camera moments” and “kissing the ground” upon her return. It didn’t help that Martha Stewart added to the pile-on of criticism with her 2007 clip experiencing zero gravity in a Boeing 727 in 2007. The text on the video read, “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind?” It was a shady reference to Perry’s 2010 hit single, “Firework.”
One look at the comments on Perry’s Instagram post after the flight proves that the general tone was negative, especially during difficult economic times. “Advancing women means actually showing up for their safety, equity, and well-being—not playing astronaut dress-up for a photo op,” wrote one critic in a lengthy response. Another follower added, “That’s great Katy. People are dying. Hope this helps.”
Perry hasn’t reacted publicly to any of the criticism, she’s now focused on launching her world tour on April 23 in Mexico City.
