In a time of increasing media skepticism and political division, comedian and commentator Bill Maher has reignited a growing debate over the credibility of mainstream news. Specifically, Maher recently targeted CNN’s Kaitlan Collins during a discussion that highlighted growing concerns about bias, selective reporting, and what many see as an abandonment of traditional journalistic objectivity.
The controversy erupted following Collins’ appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where Colbert quipped that CNN simply “reports the news straight.” The audience’s laughter in response spoke volumes—and became the starting point for Maher’s public critique.
According to Maher, the reaction wasn’t just about Colbert’s joke. It reflected a deeper truth: many Americans no longer trust CNN to offer unbiased reporting. “That tells you everything you need to know,” Maher said, questioning whether the network could still claim to be a space where both sides of the political aisle feel represented.
A Broader Media Problem?
Maher wasn’t alone in his criticism. Megyn Kelly also weighed in, labeling Collins’ reporting as aloof and lacking connection. “She might appeal to progressives,” Kelly noted, “but that doesn’t make her neutral.”
Both commentators pointed to the Trump town hall interview, in which Collins aggressively challenged the former president—an approach some viewers viewed as less journalism and more political theater. While many applauded her performance, others saw it as emblematic of CNN’s shift from neutral journalism to advocacy-based reporting.
Maher argued that CNN has increasingly overlooked stories that could damage Democratic figures, particularly the Hunter Biden laptop scandal. Initially dismissed as misinformation, the story was later authenticated. Still, Maher contended, CNN and other outlets failed to give it the attention it warranted—an omission he said would not have occurred had the laptop belonged to one of Donald Trump’s children.
“If journalism is about truth and fairness,” Maher asked, “why does one side get the spotlight while the other side gets a pass?”
Public Trust in Decline
This selective outrage, according to Maher and others, is at the core of why trust in media is at an all-time low. A recent Gallup poll shows that only 34% of Americans trust mass media to report the news fully, accurately, and fairly. Alarmingly, that figure is lower than public trust in many political institutions—including, in some cases, individual political figures like Donald Trump.
Maher concluded his remarks by issuing a warning: if the media doesn’t self-correct and return to principles of neutrality and fair coverage, it risks further alienating the very audience it aims to serve.
Is There a Path Back?
Maher noted that some publications have taken small steps in the right direction. “The New York Times now uses the word ‘lies’ in headlines about Trump,” he said. “That’s progress—but it has to apply across the board.”
Still, critics argue the solution isn’t to become more aggressive toward all sides—it’s to re-establish a consistent standard of fairness and accountability. The media must stop treating journalism as political activism and return to fact-driven, issue-based coverage that allows the public to form their own conclusions.
Collins herself has yet to directly respond to Maher’s criticism, but she has continued to defend CNN’s commitment to bringing on voices from both sides of the aisle. However, Maher remained unconvinced.
“Who’s the conservative anchor in CNN’s primetime lineup?” he asked rhetorically. “One guest panelist doesn’t make a network balanced.”
Final Thoughts
As the 2026 election cycle looms, the role of the media in shaping public perception is once again under the microscope. Bill Maher’s critique of CNN and Kaitlan Collins isn’t just a personal jab—it’s part of a broader national conversation about media ethics, trust, and the dangerous consequences of allowing personal politics to dictate public reporting.
The question now is whether CNN and other networks are willing to listen—or if they’ll double down on a strategy that may be slowly eroding the very trust they depend on.
