American reality show stars Brandi Passante and Jarrod Schulze visited Manila last weekend to promote their TV show Storage Wars at the first-ever History Con held last August 26 to 28 at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City.

PEP.ph (Philippine Entertainment Portal) had a chance to interview the Storage Wars hosts in an exclusive interview at the convention. This is the couple’s first time to visit Manila and the two already had a great time in just hours upon their arrival.

Brandi told PEP, “It’s beautiful and everybody is so nice and we’re really grateful to be here.”

Meanwhile, her partner Jarrod pretty much enjoyed playing at their hotel’s casino. He quipped, “They put us up in a hotel that actually has a casino so we’ve already lost a little bit of money here. I may have to buy a couple of storage units just to make my money back.”

During their short stay, the couple were able to feast on a few Filipino dishes but both Brandi and Jarrod admitted that they’re avoiding one thing in particular: balut.

Jarrod laughingly said, “We’re not gonna be trying that but I’m sure it’s delicious.” The businessman added, “Where we live, hotdogs are a big thing but I don’t eat them. I don’t know wanna get into it. I just don’t want to eat certain things I just don’t try.”

STORAGE WARS.
The TV show Storage Wars features a group of professional buyers of storage units whose leaseholders fail to pay their rent up to three months. These storage units are put in cash-only auction. Those who win the auction earns back the money to buy the unit by selling the items they find inside auctioned units.

Brandi shared some of their guidelines on deciding whether they should place bid for an auction storage unit. She narrated, “We look for whether it’s clean, whether the boxes are nice, whether if it looks like they took care of their things. If they don’t take care of their things, they clearly don’t have anything going on in it or any value in them.”

 NOOD KA MUNA!

Finding treasures inside the storage units can be difficult but definitely worth it. One of the most unique and expensive items they found at a unit is a bird cage. Jarrod recalled, “We found a lot of things, we found bird boxes in the beginning and they were little mechanical boxes that have this little bird that popped up. They were actually really memorable, I mean, I think were at the $10,000 range on those but they are very unique and specific to audience that buy stuff like that. Again, finding someone who will buy it is definitely a challenge.”

Aside from looking for valuable items, the most challenging part of this business is actually selling the items they found inside.

Jarrod explained, “The hardest part of what we do is actually selling the items, I mean, there’s so many different and unique things you find but it’s not always easy to find a buyer for it. That’s definitely a very big challenge. The difficult part of our business is actually finding somebody who will buy all of this stuff and being able to do it for a profit.”

The couple admitted that there are stuff they want for themselves but made a rule not to bring any of it to their homes. Brandi said, “There are certain things that we see that we like but in the beginning, we made a rule not to bring anything home.”

Jarrod added, “We don’t but I definitely buy some stuff and I just use it when I’m at the shop because there’s definitely some instances when we bought, you know, I’m a motorized anything kind of guy.

“So if it’s got wheels and a motor, I wanna buy it. I wanna try it, I mean, I eventually sell it. I don’t keep the stuff. There are some units that maybe we didn’t make a lot of money on because there is something in there that I wanted to see, to use.”

Meanwhile, PEP also asked the couple to debunk rumors about the show’s authenticity. Back in 2012, one of its buyers, Dave Hester, caused drama after claiming that the show was rigged. He was later terminated on the show.

Dave filed a $750,000 lawsuit against the producers of the show for his illegal termination and was able to return to the show in 2014.

Jarrod, however, stands by the statement that the show is as real as it gets. He explained, “Anything you see, there’s always skeptics out there that want to disprove it. If you’ve seen the show or like fortunately if you ever met Dave in real life, Dave is the epitome of hater.

“Like it’s just his disposition. He doesn’t mean it. He’s just try to destroy everything and the reason, you know, in that instance back at that point in time, he didn’t really liked feeling beat. And he felt like if we went to an auction and I got a good unit and he didn’t, then he was being, beat like I beat him.

“It’s not a competition, we’re all in business for whatever but he felt like there are lots of reason so he came up with this thing in his head at it must be rigged, it has to be rigged. How could he possibly loose. I feel like that’s kind of where it goes to my knowledge.”

The show is now on its 9th season and is currently airing on History Channel.

Wille there be another season of the reality show? Jarrod answered, “I can tell you that we’re not currently filming but we’re definitely talking about it right now. I wouldn’t be surprised if this show goes for twelve seasons.”

WORK AND FAMILY.
Jarrod and Brandi are yet to get married but they already have two kids: Cameron and Payton. The couple say there are pros and cons in working with each other.

Brandi explained, “It has its advantages and its disadvantages. It’s always good to have, you know, like a second pair of eyes to have each other’s back while we’re there. To have somebody to kind of hold you back for a bit when you’re about to make a bad decision.”

Jarrod added, “Along with the fact the we like very different things, so we’ll look at the exact same unit and I’ll see like the boxes, the bikes, there’s a pressure washer in the back, there’s a roll away tool box and Brandi will be like, there’s a Louis Vuitton bag and there’s a really nice pants and like, ‘These people have money.’ And I’m like, ‘ They have stuff!’ and she’s like, ‘Well, they have money.’ We look at the same thing through two separate eyes which gives us twice the advantage.”

Brandi and Jarrod also agreed to leave work outside of their home. Brandi said, “We figured out a balance because we’re together 24/7. You cannot bring your work life into your home life so whatever conflict we ever had during the day, we let it go when we come home.”

Jarrod continued, “You really have to separate the drama that happens at the auction from the life that you have once you walk in the house. You really have to. A lot of the times, we pick it back up tomorrow when we get back to the shop but don’t we take it home. We don’t talk about it during the dinner, we just we really have to check it at the door.”

PEP also asked if they have things they argue about. Jarrod quipped, “We disagree about everything, except for disagreeing, I mean, we never disagree about that. Now we just found common ground.”
