Seth Meyers, the host of Late Night with Seth Meyers, has always kept his comedic style sharp and relatable, and he recently took his fans on a hilarious trip down memory lane, recalling the blunder of not proposing to his wife, Alexi Ashe, in Paris—a decision he now humorously regrets.
The Not-So-Romantic Paris Getaway
As Meyers reminisced during his Lobby Baby stand-up special, he revealed that he and Alexi had been dating for four years when they decided to take a romantic birthday trip to Europe. While Meyers suggested Prague, Alexi had her heart set on Paris, and Meyers, eager to please, agreed. But little did he know, this seemingly harmless trip would lead to a misunderstanding that left Alexi less than thrilled.
Upon arriving in Paris, Alexi was visibly upset. “I said, ‘Why are you so upset?’ and she said, ‘Every one of my friends said if he’s bringing you to Paris for your birthday, he is going to propose,’” Meyers recalled with a laugh. In typical Meyers fashion, his response was both blunt and humorous. “Did you tell them about Prague? Did you tell them my opening offer was Prague? A place where famously no one gets engaged!” he quipped.
Meyers admitted his mistake, adding, “Shame on me, you cannot bring a woman who is expecting an engagement ring to Paris. It is too romantic a place for that.” Things took an even more comical turn when, while crossing a bridge over the Seine, Meyers’ passport fell out of his pocket. “It would have been easier to kick it into the river and replace it at the embassy than it would be to take a knee in Paris without an engagement ring,” he joked.
A Sweet and Memorable Proposal
Despite the misfire in Paris, Meyers did eventually propose to Ashe, and the engagement turned out to be a heartwarming family affair. He revealed that he proposed to her with the help of their beloved dog, Frisbee. “I tied [the ring] in a bow around our dog’s collar,” Meyers shared on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. The couple’s Italian greyhound had been a big part of their life together, and it was only fitting that Frisbee played a role in their proposal. Thankfully, Frisbee was well-behaved and didn’t eat the ring, which Meyers had been nervously watching to avoid disaster.
The Wedding of the Year
The couple tied the knot on September 1, 2013, at a beautiful ceremony on Martha’s Vineyard. Alexi stunned in a custom Carolina Herrera gown, while Seth wore a custom Ralph Lauren Black Label suit. The guest list was filled with SNL alums and close friends, and even country star Brad Paisley performed his hit song “Then.” Of course, Frisbee made an appearance at the wedding, although not in the way one might expect. “We got married on a farm, and the dog barked a couple of times at some passing sheep,” Seth joked. “But one of our flower girls was very good. She just threw [Frisbee] in her lap with her dress over her and then Frisbee fell asleep… she passed out.”
A Happy Family
Now, more than a decade later, Meyers and Ashe are proud parents to three children: sons Ashe and Axel and daughter Addie. They also have their sweet pup, Frisbee, who remains a cherished member of the family. It’s clear that while Meyers may have taken his time to propose, he’s more than made up for it with a life full of love, laughter, and family.
From the hilarious and awkward Paris mishap to the sweet proposal that involved their dog, Seth Meyers’ journey to marriage with Alexi Ashe is a reminder that love isn’t always perfect, but it’s always worth the wait.
