Whoopi Goldberg reflected on her past marriages during a candid discussion on The View on March 27, revealing that while intimacy was never lacking, the experience of marriage itself wasn’t enjoyable for her.
“I was always having great sex,” said the 69-year-old EGOT winner. “I just wasn’t having any fun.” Her remarks came during a segment on Ben Affleck’s GQ interview, in which he described his divorce from Jennifer Lopez as free of drama or scandal.
Her remarks echo sentiments she has expressed before — particularly her disinterest in the emotional demands of traditional relationships. In a 2024 interview on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Goldberg admitted, “You have to be invested in how [your partner’s] feeling. I am not.”
Her three marriages — to Alvin Martin, David Claessen, and Lyle Trachtenberg — all ended in divorce between 1979 and 1995. She shares a daughter, Alexandrea, 51, with Martin.
During the segment, Joy Behar asked Goldberg if she related to a viral op-ed about women finding joy and great sex after divorce. Goldberg replied, “It had nothing to do with the divorce — I was just glad to get the hell out of there.”
Though she’s no longer interested in romantic relationships, Goldberg values friendship and respect, maintaining contact with her exes. “I’m in touch with every one of them,” she said. “I don’t have to love you, but I will be respectful.”
