In an eyebrow-raising moment on NBC’s Today Show, longtime host Savannah Guthrie didn’t hold back in her assessment of the escalating feud between former President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk—calling the entire spectacle “giving a 7th grade girl.”

Guthrie made the comment during Thursday morning’s panel discussion, referencing the high school-style pettiness of the social media barbs being exchanged between the two former allies. “First of all, to just use TikTok language,” Guthrie said, “it’s giving a 7th grade girl. This back and forth, online, and from the Oval Office.”

Her co-hosts—including Meet the Press moderator Kristen Welker—burst into laughter, with Welker agreeing: “Savannah, you hit the nail on the head.”

From Allies to Enemies

Once close collaborators—Musk even briefly held a symbolic government role under Trump—the relationship between the former president and the Tesla CEO has completely collapsed in recent weeks. Following Musk’s exit from the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE), the billionaire began publicly criticizing Trump’s policies and slamming the massive congressional spending bill championed by his former ally.

Trump wasted no time firing back. Speaking in a press conference, he said: “Elon knew the inner workings of this bill better than almost anyone sitting here… He only developed a problem when he found out we’re going to have to cut the electric vehicle mandate.”

Then came the real dagger: “Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore.”

The feud has attracted commentary across the political spectrum. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez chimed in with her own biting remark, telling Spectrum News 1: “Oh man, the girls are fighting, aren’t they?”

She added: “These two huge egos were not long for being together in this world as friends… this breakup was a long time coming.”

Part of what makes the feud so eyebrow-raising is how deeply personal it has become. Musk has even gone so far as to suggest that Trump may be named in Jeffrey Epstein-related files, while Trump has declared Musk “a man who has lost his mind.”

Guthrie’s use of the phrase “giving 7th grade girl” quickly went viral on social media, with many applauding her for summing up the absurdity of two of the world’s most powerful men engaging in what increasingly looks like a public meltdown.

Her co-anchor Craig Melvin reportedly quipped off-camera, “It’s like watching a Real Housewives reunion in a Silicon Valley bunker.”

With Musk continuing to blast Trump’s energy policies on X, and Trump reportedly lobbying conservative lawmakers to distance themselves from Musk’s ventures, this feud doesn’t appear to be cooling down anytime soon.
