Russell Laffitte, Accomplice of Alex Murdaugh, Pleads Guilty in Major Fraud Scheme – Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison

Russell Laffitte, the former CEO of Palmetto State Bank and alleged accomplice to disgraced lawyer Alex Murdaugh, has pleaded guilty to multiple federal fraud charges. Laffitte’s guilty plea comes as part of his involvement in Murdaugh’s wide-reaching financial crimes that devastated clients and stole millions of dollars.

Court records show that Laffitte, who was previously convicted for helping Murdaugh steal roughly $2 million from clients, will now serve five years in federal prison. In addition to his sentence, Laffitte is required to pay restitution of over $3.5 million. He will also be banned from working at any federally insured bank or credit union without prior approval.

Laffitte’s crimes date back to when he was CEO of Palmetto State Bank, a position that allowed him to act as the conservator and financial representative for Murdaugh’s personal injury clients. Laffitte allegedly used his authority to facilitate Murdaugh’s schemes, which involved stealing funds from Murdaugh’s clients and misusing his bank’s resources.

The Scheme Unfolds: How Laffitte Played a Role in Murdaugh’s Financial Downfall

While Laffitte initially claimed he was simply following Murdaugh’s instructions, his involvement in the theft of millions from clients, including the case of Hakeem L. Pinckney, a deaf athlete rendered quadriplegic in a tragic car accident, paints a different picture. Pinckney’s case, which led to Laffitte’s conviction in 2022, was one of the key instances where Murdaugh’s financial schemes were uncovered.

In addition to this, Murdaugh and his former college roommate and attorney, Cory Fleming, were involved in another massive theft involving the Satterfield family, where $4 million was stolen from the insurance payout after the death of Murdaugh’s housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield. This theft is just one part of the 100 financial crimes charges Murdaugh is facing, which span millions of dollars taken from law firm clients.

A Legal Setback for Murdaugh’s Allies

Laffitte’s guilty plea is a significant blow to Murdaugh’s remaining allies, as it further implicates those who helped orchestrate the web of fraud and theft surrounding Murdaugh’s career. With Laffitte now sentenced to prison, many wonder how much more the disgraced lawyer’s team of accomplices will reveal in the coming months.

Laffitte’s earlier sentence, which was overturned by an appellate court in November 2024, saw his conviction called into question over procedural issues. However, his latest plea deal and the five-year sentence mark a definitive step toward accountability.

As for Murdaugh, his future remains uncertain as he faces his own trial for the financial crimes and the murders of his wife and son. The Murdaugh case continues to unravel, with more twists and revelations expected in the coming months.
