Popular HGTV host Tarek El Moussa, beloved by fans for his charismatic presence and real estate expertise, has shared an emotional revelation about his private struggle with cancer. El Moussa, now 43, has candidly opened up about facing a double cancer diagnosis at a young age, calling it a life-changing and deeply terrifying experience.
A Shocking Discovery and Terrifying Reality
At just 31, El Moussa faced the unimaginable—being diagnosed not with one, but two separate forms of cancer. Initially alerted by a concerned viewer who noticed a suspicious lump on his neck, doctors soon confirmed the worst: thyroid cancer. But as he adjusted to this devastating news, another blow came—El Moussa was also diagnosed with testicular cancer, intensifying the fear and uncertainty he faced.
“Nothing prepares you for hearing the word ‘cancer,’ especially twice,” El Moussa said, sharing how deeply the diagnoses affected him emotionally. “In that moment, it hit me—I might not survive this. My biggest fear was not being there to watch my daughter Taylor grow up.”
Facing the Battle Head-On
Despite the severity of his situation, El Moussa fought bravely through numerous treatments, surgeries, and emotional ups and downs. Now celebrating ten years cancer-free, he openly shares how the harrowing experience changed his outlook on life.

“Cancer made me realize how fragile life is and taught me true gratitude,” he explained. “Every single day, I appreciate being here. I cherish moments that might have passed unnoticed before.”
Personal Life Tested to Breaking Point
El Moussa’s health challenges had profound implications for his personal life as well. During his illness, his marriage to fellow HGTV personality Christina Haack began to unravel. After seven years together, the couple announced their split in 2016, officially divorcing in 2018.
However, the challenges didn’t stop Tarek from rebuilding his life. He found love again with Heather Rae Young, star of Netflix’s Selling Sunset, marrying her in 2024. The couple now shares a son, Tristan, born in early 2023.

Today, El Moussa balances a flourishing career, including his hit shows “Flipping 101” and “The Flip Off,” with his blended family life. Although filming alongside his ex-wife and current spouse can be awkward, Tarek humorously addresses it with honesty, even joking about a time he mistakenly called Heather by his ex-wife’s name.
“Let’s just say it was not my proudest moment,” he laughed. “But Heather forgave me—eventually.”
