Macaulay Culkin, the actor who became a household name for his role in Home Alone, has opened up about his strained relationship with his father, Christopher “Kit” Culkin, revealing that he hasn’t spoken to him in over 30 years. In a candid conversation on the Sibling Revelry podcast hosted by Kate and Oliver Hudson, Culkin discussed why he walked away from acting at a young age and why he cut ties with his father, whom he described as “narcissistic.”

“I was tired,” the now 44-year-old actor recalled during the podcast. “I remember talking to my father and saying, ‘I’m getting tired. I think I need a break.’ But he kept pushing me, and I felt trapped.”

Culkin shared that it wasn’t until his parents’ divorce that he was finally able to step away from the acting world. The actor mentioned that he hasn’t spoken to his father since the split, and he didn’t mince words about how he feels: “I haven’t spoken to him in about 30-something years. Oh, he deserves it too,” he said. “He’s a man who had seven kids, and now he has four grandkids. And none of them want anything to do with him.”

Culkin was especially vocal about the emotional and physical abuse he allegedly suffered at the hands of his father. In past interviews, Culkin has claimed that Kit was both “mentally and physically” abusive, recalling how his father used to make threats like “Do good or I’ll hit you.” “He was a bad man. He was abusive, physically and mentally— I can show you all my scars if I wanted to,” Culkin said in 2018.

Recalling the tension during his parents’ custody battle, Culkin explained how he made a stand: “I told my lawyer, ‘I’m not doing that.’ I double-dared the judge to arrest the most famous kid in the world for not wanting to visit my abusive father.”

Now, as a father himself, Culkin explained how his traumatic childhood experiences influence how he raises his two sons, Dakota and Carson, with fiancée Brenda Song. “It’s one of my earliest memories of him—thinking, when I grow up, this is how I’m not gonna be with my kids,” he said.

Despite the pain from his past, Culkin has found peace in his personal life and career. He reflected that he’s in a much better place now. “I’m probably in the best place of my entire life,” he said. He also added that his experience with his father has served as motivation to be a better parent.
