Craig Melvin Playfully Roasts Dylan Dreyer in Hilarious On-Air Exchange That Leaves Co-Hosts in Stitches

Craig Melvin, well-known for his quick wit and playful jabs, recently brought a wave of laughter to The Today Show during a lighthearted segment that had co-hosts Dylan Dreyer and Al Roker laughing—and slightly stunned.

During the April 8th broadcast, the trio was reminiscing about their childhood activities. From leading sports teams to participating in AV clubs, each host confessed to being what most would consider a bit “nerdy” back in the day. As they shared their stories, Craig chimed in with a sly observation, suggesting, “I think there’s some kind of correlation!”

But things got extra cheeky when Craig turned to Dylan and playfully jabbed, “It’s turned out okay – I’ve seen those pictures of you, it’s like you weren’t winning beauty pageants.” The moment took a second to land as Dylan paused to process the comment, while Al Roker gave an exaggerated reaction. Thankfully, Dylan took it all in stride, laughing along and reflecting on her old photo, saying: “It was a look—the glasses, the bangs.” Craig doubled down with, “We were late bloomers,” to which Dylan quipped, “There was a compliment in there somewhere…”

This type of friendly banter isn’t unusual for Craig and Dylan, who share a genuinely close relationship both on and off camera. Their camaraderie has made for some of the show’s most memorable segments—including one where Dylan trusted Craig enough to babysit her three sons as part of a fun Today Show feature.

Back in June, Craig spent an afternoon at Dylan’s Manhattan apartment, taking care of her energetic boys: Calvin (8), Oliver (5), and Rusty (4). A father of two himself, Craig threw himself into the experience—playing games, feeding them, and even reading them stories. At the end of the exhausting (but heartwarming) day, he wiped his brow and admitted, “This is me after babysitting Dylan’s boys,” before adding, “You know what? She’s got three good boys.”

Another standout moment in their friendship happened during an NBCU Academy Fireside Chat in October 2023. Joined by Sheinelle Jones and hosted by Zinhle Essamuah, the trio shared behind-the-scenes stories from their early careers. Dylan admitted she once worked with a voice coach to improve her delivery—and even saw a personality coach because of her shyness. Craig couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “A personality coach?” he exclaimed, clearly amused. Dylan explained, “I was shy.” Craig jokingly replied, “No you’re not!” Dylan insisted, “Not now, but it takes me a while to open up.”

When asked what advice the coach gave, Dylan laughed: “He said, ‘I don’t know what to do to help you. You just need to relax and get more comfortable!’” Zinhle sweetly added, “I love your personality,” which Craig quickly turned into another joke: “Because she had a coach!
