For months, students in a struggling journalism program in Newark, New Jersey, thought they were working with an anonymous virtual mentor named “Mr. M.” They emailed their stories, practiced news delivery, and received detailed, encouraging feedback.
What they didn’t know: Mr. M was Today Show anchor Craig Melvin.
In a feel-good twist captured on video, Craig appeared in-person at the program’s end-of-year showcase—disguised as a visiting speaker. As he entered the classroom, students clapped politely… until he took off his mask and revealed his identity. The room erupted in screams and tears.
“You’ve been mentoring us this whole time?” one student shouted.
“Yes,” Craig said, smiling. “And I’ve read every word. You all are incredible.”
