Brandon Williams has defended former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, insisting he should not have been sacked because he brought the ‘DNA’ of Manchester United back to Old Trafford.

In an interview on Ben Foster’s Fozcast podcast, Williams said Solskjaer was the ‘best coach’ he ever worked with. The player stressed:

“Even off the pitch, he’s always talking to you, giving you advice, especially when I was young – he’s like a good coach. I don’t think he deserved to be sacked, really. He’s on the right track.”

Williams added that Solskjaer knew the club, the culture and the traditions of United, something he felt from a young age:

“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer knows the club, he knows what it stands for, he knows the DNA of the club. That’s what was taught to me as a kid. I feel like he brings that back.”

The former player also revealed that Red Devils legend Patrice Evra was the first person to introduce him to Solskjaer. Evra was working with United’s Under-21s at the time and advised the Norwegian: “You need to give him a chance.”

This was the turning point that helped Williams make his first-team debut in the 2019/20 season. He became a mainstay for Manchester United, who finished 13th in the Premier League, in the 2019/20 season, but the star’s career subsequently declined dramatically.

The defender left Old Trafford last summer when his £65,000-a-week contract expired. Williams is currently without a club and is awaiting trial for dangerous driving, which could see him jailed for up to two years.
