A rumor that circulated online in late July and early August 2025 claimed that “The Late Show” host Stephen Colbert “rescued” abandoned twins who surprised him with an appearance on his show 20 years later. Snopes readers emailed us to ask whether the rumor was true.

For example, on Aug. 1, 2025, a Facebook page called Prime Time Voices posted (archived) the story, receiving 20,000 likes. The post included three pictures of a smiling Colbert. In one, Colbert held two babies in his arms. In another, he stood with his arms around the shoulders of two young women. The story began, “20 Years Ago, Stephen Colbert Rescued Two Abandoned Twin Girls — 20 Years Later, They Returned as a Shocking Surprise!”

Other Facebook users also shared the same claim (archived, archived). Some of those posts featured links in top comments leading to articles hosted by WordPress blogs, such as one advertisement-filled story hosted on the sportnewss.livextop.com website.

However, searches of Bing, DuckDuckGo, Google and Yahoo found no news media outlets reporting about Colbert’s alleged “rescued” twins appearing on his show (archived, archived, archived, archived). Prominent news media outlets would have widely reported this rumor, if true.

Rather, the person or people who authored the story fabricated the entire tale as one of hundreds of inspirational tales that depicted celebrities and athletes performing inspiring acts of kindness. They aimed to earn advertising revenue on websites linked from the aforementioned Facebook posts. As we’ll lay out later in this article, the story about Colbert and the “rescued” twins amounted to fiction.

An examination of the Prime Time Voices page’s stories found multiple indications of artificial intelligence-generated (AI) images and text. For example, regarding the picture included in the posts, the Sightengine AI detection website found a 99% probability that someone “likely” generated the image with AI. Aside from this one example, the page appeared to be solely dedicated to spreading claims about Colbert.

Snopes contacted a manager of the Prime Time Voices Facebook page to ask about the fictional stories displayed on the feed and will update this story if we receive more information.

In addition to the AI-generated image, digging deeper into the posts and attached articles revealed further elements that discredited the story.

For example, the claims all said the twins Colbert allegedly “rescued” and raised surprised the host during a live recording of “The Late Show.” We looked through highlight reels from show’s episodes from July 21 to July 31 and found no sign of the alleged appearance.

Additionally, while most claims used the same photo collage as Prime Time Videos, one early claim on July 30 used a different set of images showing Colbert and what appeared to be a different set of twins.

According to his 2011 biography, titled, “And Nothing But the Truthiness: The Rise (and Further Rise) of Stephen Colbert,” the host revealed he had three children, none of them twins. According to posts in 2025, Colbert allegedly “rescued” the abandoned twins “20 years ago” meaning they would have been at least six years old in 2011 and likely included in Colbert’s biography if the claim were true.

These stories all very much resembled glurge, which Dictionary.com defines as “stories, often sent by email, that are supposed to be true and uplifting, but which are often fabricated and sentimental.”

For further reading, Snopes has previously reported on other claims involving Colbert, including whether he was moving to CNN or hinting at running for a seat in the Senate.
