Matt Groening has advised his fellow Americans to “delete Fox News” from their televisions.

The animator, best-known for creating hit shows The Simpsons and Futurama, was appearing at San Diego Comic-Con, on Saturday (26 July).

Talking about predictions made on The Simpsons over the year, including that Donald Trump would become president, Groening gave his outlook on the future of the US, including that children across the country would “liberate Republican parents from the cult of MAGA”.

MAGA, Make America Great Again, is the slogan used by Trump supporters. It is also used to refer to those on the right of the Republican Party.

To help his prediction become true, Groening said: “Grab the TV remote, go to menu, go to controls, vertical controls, look for channel list and delete Fox News.”

The cable channel, largely controlled by Rupert Murdoch’s family, produces talk shows that often push right-wing talking points.

As of last month, the network had aired more than 400 week-day segments over four months during which trans athletes were mentioned – 59 in one week alone.

Originally on Fox before Disney acquired the series, The Simpsons has often made fun of the network.

In the season 22 episode ‘The Fool Monty’which aired in 2010, a helicopter appears with the slogan: “Fox News: Not Racist, But #1 With Racists.” The joke was criticised by political pundit Bill O’Reilly, who accused the show of “continuing to bite the hand that feeds part of it”.

In response, the following episode showed another helicopter, this time with the slogan: “Fox News. Unsuitable For Viewers Under 75.”
