THE cause of death of New York Yankees legend Brett Gardner’s son has been released – weeks after the teen mysteriously died while on vacation.

Miller Gardner, 14, died suddenly at a plush Costa Rica resort on March 21, sparking a lengthy investigation.

During their probe, investigators suggested that the teen may have died from asphyxiation before walking back the theory.

Food poisoning and carbon monoxide poisoning were also suggested as potential causes of the teen’s death.

Now, authorities in Costa Rica have revealed Miller died from carbon monoxide poisoning, as reported by the local news outlet CRHoy.

Officials revealed the hotel room where Miller was staying had “high levels” of the gas.

“The toxicology results are in, and the carboxyhemoglobin test found a saturation of 64%,” investigator Randall Zuniga said.

“Concentrations above 50% are already lethal.”

Zuniga claimed that next to the Gardner’s room, there was a machine room and he suggested there may have been some contamination which reached the hotel rooms.

He said tests revealed carbon monoxide levels as high as 600 parts per million.

The hotel strongly disputed the claims.

The report revealed that drug tests, including for the likes of fentanyl, were carried out and results were negative.

Zuniga revealed the case is now closed and the toxicology report will now be sent to the Department of Forensic Medicine.

But, the Gardner family is waiting to bring Miller’s body back to the US.

Last week, it was reported that the family potentially faced a 90-day wait for the autopsy results, according to The Mail.

Potential delays were linked to the backlog of homicide cases officials had to deal with.

Miller, who was staying at the Arenas Del Mar resort, fell ill after eating some food.

He was found unresponsive in his bed, which initially led investigators to believe he may have choked to death.

But, they later discovered that his windpipe wasn’t blocked.

Doctor Kevin Gannon, who was part of the team that rushed to Miller, ruled out food poisoning or the theory he may have suffered an allergic reaction.

“Some people are saying it was anaphylactic shock from food he ate,” he told the New York Post.

“But I will say it is very, very rare for a patient to eat food and go that long without a reaction.”

Gannon told People that Miller was clinically dead when they arrived on the scene.

He and his team carried out CPR for 30 minutes but it was unsuccessful.

Miller’s father, Brett Gardner, spent his entire MLB career with the Yankees, spanning 14 years.

He was part of the 2009 team that defeated the Philadelphia Phillies in the World Series.
