Behind an elite Special Forces team who took part in 2018 Afghanistan covert missions, the Green Berets utilized one the world’s toughest weapons—and he’s as cute as he is powerful.

Working military dog Frenky retried from the U.S. Army just last month, and to celebrate his 8 years of dedicated service, he was rewarded with the sweetest gift: a reunion with his handler.

Frenky, a loyal, devoted and incredibly smart German Shepherd, hadn’t seen his former handler, U.S. Army Ssg. Kristin Vanderzanden, in 3 years. She’d been reassigned in another part of the country saying in a press release “it was like leaving a child behind.”

After hearing about Frenky’s possible retirement, she was “chomping at the bit” to bring him home. With the help of American Humane Society’s efforts—transporting the pup to his new home in Texas and covering his vet fees for life—Frenky and Vanderzanden are together again.

The now 10-year-old pup can live his best, relaxed life with his best gal who added she’s “excited to give Frenky the opportunity to enjoy being a dog, relaxing on the couch, and living in a home, instead of a kennel.”

Serving more than 4 years together conducting combat tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, the dynamic duo encountered terrifying things like sniper fire and mortar rounds. With Frenky’s expertise in explosive detection bite work, and calm (sometimes silly) demeanor, not only saved lives but made him the unofficial mascot to boost base morale.

Their Secret Service missions also helped protect high-profile VIPs and world dignitaries proving Frenky was the right man—or dog—for the job.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to reunite military working dog Frenky with his best friend,” said Dr. Robin Ganzert, president and CEO of American Humane Society.

“American Humane Society is honored to help give this courageous canine the comfortable retirement he deserves after six years of distinguished service to our country.”

This is one heartwarming reunion I won’t soon forget. Thank you both for your service, but especially you, Frenky! Good boy!
