Roughly a year after CBS canceled the long-running, family-focused Blue Bloods after 14 seasons, the network is expanding the franchise with Boston Blue. Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as hotheaded detective Danny Reagan, now joining the Boston Police Department alongside new partner Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green). Danny’s son, Sean (Mika Amonsen), is also following in his father’s footsteps as a rookie cop.
While Boston Blue is its own show, it maintains the charm of Blue Bloods. Entertainment Weekly praised its “easy, buddy-cop chemistry” between Wahlberg and Martin-Green, keeping the familiar heart and family focus of its predecessor.
Donnie Wahlberg as Danny Reagan
Wahlberg, a founding member of New Kids on the Block, launched his acting career in the ’90s with films like Ransom and The Sixth Sense. He starred as Danny Reagan on Blue Bloods for 14 seasons while also touring with NKOTB and producing the reality show Wahlburgers. Wahlberg called Boston Blue “a brand new chapter built on a strong foundation” while retaining the family-centered heart of the original series.
Sonequa Martin-Green as Lena Silver
Martin-Green is known for The Walking Dead and as Star Trek: Discovery’s Michael Burnham. On Boston Blue, she plays Lena Silver, Danny’s new partner, who also comes from a prominent law enforcement family. Martin-Green reflected on joining another beloved franchise, calling it a unique opportunity to build a new iteration.
Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silve
Lawson, best known as Det. Jules O’Hara on Psych, plays Sarah Silver, the BPD’s strong-willed superintendent. She says the series’ “dinner table” moments remain the heartbeat of the show, echoing the family dynamics of Blue Bloods.
Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver
Reuben, an Emmy-nominated actress from ER, plays Boston District Attorney Mae Silver, the matriarch of the Silver family. EW highlighted her commanding presence and how she mirrors the gravitas Tom Selleck’s Frank brought to Blue Bloods.
Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters
Hudson, famous as Ghostbusters’ Winston Zeddemore, plays Lena’s grandfather and a community leader. He notes the character provides a meaningful perspective within Boston’s community.
Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan
Amonsen takes over the role of Danny’s son, Sean, previously played by Andrew Terraciano on Blue Bloods. Sean moves to Boston to pursue his law enforcement career independently, maintaining the Reagan family legacy.
Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver
Scribner, known for Black-ish and Grown-ish, plays Jonah Silver, Lena’s brother and Sean’s friend, a rookie cop navigating Boston’s streets.
Bridget Moynahan as Erin Reagan
Moynahan reprises her Blue Bloods role as Erin Reagan in the Boston Blue premiere, helping longtime fans transition into the new setting. She is also set to direct an episode this season, with more surprises teased by Wahlberg.
