Sportscaster Bryant Gumbel has reportedly been hospitalized following a “medical emergency” in New York City, according to TMZ.
Gumbel, 77, a former host on Today and HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, was taken from his apartment building in Manhattan to a local hospital around 9 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 20, sources told TMZ.
According to the outlet’s report, Bryant exited his apartment building on a gurney escorted by first responders, where he is “still getting treatment” as of Tuesday afternoon.
A family member of the sportscaster’s said Bryant is “okay,” when reached by TMZ, however, no further information about Bryant’s condition or what led to the medical emergency was shared by the relative.
Additional information has not been made available at this time.
PEOPLE has contacted representatives for Gumbel for comment.
Gumbel, a four-time Emmy winner, began as a co-host of the Today Show in 1982, alongside Jane Pauley and Katie Couric, before joining CBS as a broadcaster in 1997. He began hosting Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel in 1995 before concluding the long-running series on HBO in December 2023.
The sportscaster recently lost his older brother, renowned NFL broadcaster and March Madness host Greg Gumbel, in December 2024.
His family shared a statement with PEOPLE at the time of Greg’s passing, saying, “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of our beloved husband and father, Greg Gumbel. He passed away peacefully surrounded by much love after a courageous battle with cancer.”
The statement, written by Greg’s widow Marcy and daughter Michelle, continued, “Greg approached his illness like one would expect he would, with stoicism, grace, and positivity,” it continued. “He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten.”
